GREAT BREXPECTATIONS ~ An Epic Tale of Uncertainty...

It's this title that makes yours truly appreciate living on the American Riviera. Regarding the BREXIT Referendum, chaos was predicted and chaos ensued. The best response, immediately following the historic vote, was posted to social media by one of our close Scottish friends. He added an ounce of levity to the situation, stating: "And now for some football news. Wales , Northern Ireland and England, pack your bags immediately - this is a European competition!" Of course, three days later Iceland added insult to injury with their stunning defeat of England in the European Championship. Yeah, glad to live where we do... But what does it actually mean for 'our' real estate and economy? Please read on and be sure to check out this month's edition of Guitar of the Month at the bottom of the letter!

So what does the U.K. quandary mean to the financial well-being of our side of the pond? Janet Yellen, chair of the Federal Reserve Board, recently offered her opinion that a Brexit would be bad for the American economy, although other than financial market turmoil likely to follow such a vote she did not provide much detail on how the economy would be damaged. In contrast, David Berson, Nationwide’s chief economist, sees more upside for the U.S. from a Brexit. He agrees with Yellen on the immediate turmoil, but thinks the effect will be small and might be positive if the U.S. benefits from a flight to safety.

If there is one thing we've learned about economics, it is this; the economy depends about as much on economists, as the weather depends on weather forecasters. Truth be told, turmoil isn’t good for any country’s economy, but it can create conditions that are. In this case, the turmoil is likely to create a worldwide flight to safe(r) assets while the longer-term implications are sorted out. And safer assets mostly mean American assets in this case since all European ones will be seen as riskier. The resulting inflow of money will likely boost the American stock markets and could provide enough extra money searching for U.S. bonds that the Fed could raise its interest rates with less impact on other rates such as on mortgages. For those who really just want the bottom line, in simplest terms; right now, our dollar can buy considerably more pints in a U.K. pub...

Guitar of the month: 1952 Gibson Les Paul Model - Debuting in 1931, the Deluxe was introduced as Epiphone's top-of the line guitar. The Epiphone Masterbilt Deluxe was the fanciest, most powerful archtop guitar of its day. Late in 1935, Epiphone introduced a totally redesigned line of bigger, more powerful guitars engineered to meet the demands of the big band era. Originally christened the Super Deluxe, this guitar was the top of the 17" line, and featured the asymmetrical Masterbilt headstock with an ornate tree-of-life inlay, segmented f-holes, mother of pearl cloud fingerboard inlays, extra binding at the edges of the fingerboard, a new streamlined bound tortoise pickguard, and bound cello-style f-holes. Regarded by many as the pinnacle of Epiphone design, the DeLuxe are almost invariably excellent sounding and playing guitars as well. Introduced in 1941, the Zephyr Deluxe was Epiphone's top-of-the line 17" instrument. The Zephyr Deluxe Regent was the electric cutaway version of their legendary Deluxe model archtop.
